A Virginia police officer is lucky to be alive after narrowly escaping an out-of-control car that came directly at him! The scary and shocking moment was all captured on dashcam video and has since gone viral.

The incident happened on Monday along Fairfax County Parkway. An officer pulled over a car that was traveling 73 mph in a 50 mph zone, according to Fairfax Deputy Police Chief Bob Blakley. While trying to speak with the driver of the vehicle, the officer quickly noticed a BMW skidding out of control and crossing the center median. The cop is seen sprinting for his dear life when he realizes the vehicle is coming in his direction.

In the clip, you can see the vehicle slamming into the car that the officer pulled over, sending debris flying through the air. Thankfully, he managed to escape without serious injuries. Almost immediately following the collision, the officer is seen hopping over a guardrail and radioing for help. “My cruiser was hit. Driver was hit. I’m trying to check on injuries,” he is heard telling emergency responders. So who was behind the speeding vehicle?

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said a 17-year-old driver going “well over 120 mph” in a 2018 BMW M3 caused the crash. The driver, whose name was not released, was ticketed for reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor.

“The car involved in that collision yesterday was a whole lot of car for an inexperienced driver,” he said told reporters on Tuesday. “It was going way too fast. It was a rocket, and then it became a missile.”

Everyone involved including the teen sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“The Fairfax County Police Department is relieved that this crash did not result in a tragedy,” Fairfax County Police said. “This is an important reminder that life can change in an instant. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive safely and arrive safely. Parents and guardians should consider using this video as an opportunity to have a conversation with their teen drivers about how their driving behavior can affect the lives of others.”

They concluded, “We are committed to traffic safety and will continue to enforce traffic laws and educate drivers in an attempt to curb the senseless loss of life that occurs during preventable fatal crashes.”

Davis said that the name of the officer would be released to the public but he wants to give him time to process the near-fatal event.

“It’s quite the story for him to eventually tell,” Davis said. “But right now, he’s just glad to be alive.”

This news comes just three weeks after the deadly incident that happened in New York. A speeding driver trying to swerve around Queens Parkway died after the SUV flipped multiple times and slammed into a tree. Medics rushed the victim to Elmhurst Hospital Center but were unable to save the driver. His name was not immediately released. It was also noted that nobody else was hurt in the crash.
