Video Shows Black Woman Being Dragged By Hair From Car By Police Officer

A black librarian says that she was dragged by her hair and pulled out of her car at a traffic stop in North Carolina by police officers.

According to newly released bodycam footage Stephanie Bottom, 66, was on her way to a funeral when a Rowan County sheriff deputy tried to pull her over for allegedly speeding.

WSBTV reports that Stephanie said that when she stopped, the officers already had guns pointed before pulling her out of her car by her hair. She suffered a torn rotator cuff from the incident and was unable to work for eight months. One of the officers allegedly “bragged about ‘grabbing a handful of dreads’ and said ‘at that point she earned it.”

“Ms. Bottom was peaceful at all times, and officers knew they were dealing with an elderly woman,” said Ian Mance, a lawyer who represents Bottom. “Our complaint alleges these officers had no reason to use any force, much less the level of force they employed. Ms. Bottom wasn’t even arrested.”
