In a letter dated Monday (March 17), additional details are coming out about the deal between the United States Postal Service and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). On Thursday (March 13), USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy first alerted lawmakers about agreeing to work with Elon Musk’s government agency on reform, which includes cutting 10,000 workers and shedding billions of dollars from the postal budget.

Last week, DeJoy’s agency signed an agreement with Musk’s agency on Wednesday (March 12). In the letter, issued to Congressional leaders on Thursday, DeJoy said DOGE will “assist us in identifying and achieving further efficiencies.”

The letter arrived months after speculation about the fate of the USPS under President Donald Trump; especially with Musk’s help in gutting the federal workforce. Trump has also floated the idea of making the Post Office private or folding it into the Commerce Department. Meanwhile, Musk believes it should be privatized.

The USPS is an independent agency that’s generally self-financed through its own revenue. It has not been part of a Cabinet-level agency since 1971.

USPS Postmaster General Defends Decision To Let DOGE Help Postal Service Fix ‘Big Problems’

Before DeJoy’s Monday letter detailing the details about the USPS and DOGE agreement, Democratic lawmakers on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform demanded a hearing for more transparency on the Trump Administration and DOGE’s plan for the agency.

In DeJoy’s Monday letter, following up on Wednesday’s note, he told lawmakers:

“While we have accomplished a great deal, these specific initiatives for which we have sought assistance from the DOGE team for a variety of reasons remain undone … DOGE is the only other game in town that seems oriented toward helping us to achieve our efficiency and cost goals [as outlined in DeJoy’s 10-year Delivering for America plan.] … Only the data and information required to pursue these initiatives will be provided to the DOGE team members … I can assure you they are not, as some have suggested, intended surreptitiously to make the organization more suited to privatization, nor do they constitute a ‘bailout’ of any kind …”
