US Claims Responsibility For Airstrike That Killed Iranian General And Seven Others

The Pentagon confirmed that the United States has carried out an airstrike that killed Gen. Qassim Soleimani and seven others at Baghdad Airport.

According to the New York Post, a statement released by the United States Department of Defense confirmed the airstrike that was ordered by President Donald Trump.

“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization,”

Additionally, the Pentagon said the attack was carried out as an act of defense due to Soleimani planning to kill American diplomats and soldiers in Iran.

“He had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months — including the attack on December 27th — culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel,

The attack was approved by Donald Trump last week and he confirmed the news on Twitter with an image of the American flag earlier this evening.
