Rico Harrison and Mia Wilson launched the Innovending machine after becoming tired of traveling several miles to buy products for their hair. According to WXYZ-Detroit, the pair decided to fill the vending machine with essential black hair care products such as durags, bonnets, hair glue, and other items after receiving a grant from the UM organization, optiMize.

“The University really welcomed this idea and I kinda got a feeling that they felt a bit of guilt that students didn’t feel represented here and that this has been a problem for so long,” Rico said to the outlet.

Mia said the products were received within two weeks and they were able to launch the vending machine quickly. They also hope that more machines will be available in dorm rooms, the library, and other college campuses.

“We just got those products in there two weeks ago and ever since then, people have been really, really happy. And a lot of alumni have been saying like, ‘I wish this was here when I was in college. We really needed this when I was in college,’”
