The University of Alabama basketball player who is alleged to have shot and killed a 23-year-old mother on Sunday was all because she wasn’t interested in talking to him, her mother has claimed. 21-year-old Darius Miles and Michael Lynn Davis have been charged with capital murder of Jamea Jonae Harris’s death after she was shot and killed near “The Strip,” an area that is just minutes away from the campus.

Harris’ mother, DeCarla Cotton, still shocked by the senseless shooting, has since issued a few words about the tragic incident, claiming that her daughter’s life was taken “because he wouldn’t talk to him,” referring to Miles, who is accused of shooting at the car Harris was riding in. The suspects were arrested shortly after cops obtained surveillance footage along with witness statements describing the two men who matched Davis and Miles’ appearance.

Cotton had told AL.com that her daughter was only in the area to visit a family relative, saying, “She was a beautiful young woman who loved her family and most of all her 5-year-old son Kaine. She was just trying to enjoy her weekend with her cousin that attends the University of Alabama and her boyfriend.”

Miles’ attorney William C. White II gave a statement to Fox News Digital, saying that his client is maintaining his innocence in the case and “looks forward to his day in court,” just one day after footage of him sobbing during his arrest surfaced on social media.

The scandal has since led Miles to be removed from the men’s basketball team a the university; he had already been ruled out of the entire season the day prior following an ankle injury, sources close to the school said.

“The University of Alabama’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community,” the university affirmed in a statement of its own upon hearing about Miles’ arrest. “We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”
