Ukraine President Declines US Evacuation Offer And Refuses To Leave Country Amid War With Russia: “I Need Ammunition, Not A Ride’
According to the Associated Press, the US government has offered to evacuate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from Kyiv. However, he declined.
“The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” Zelensky said, AP reports, citing a senior American intelligence official with direct knowledge of the conversation. The 44-year-old President decided to remain in Ukraine’s capital instead as Russian forces continue to invade their territory.
Zelensky also made a video address early on Friday saying “I am staying in the government quarters together with others. The enemy has designated me as target number one, and my family as target number two.” Later that night, Zelensky addressed his countrymen again telling them to prepare to fight while urging unity and strength.
Russia began its invasion of Ukraine earlier this week, according to the Ukraine government. As the attack still continues, explosions and airstrikes have been reported, with threats mounting against the capital, Kyiv, a city of 2.8 million people
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression toward Ukraine has been widely condemned by US President Biden who announced sanctions on Russia as well as Putin.
