The hours-long traffic delay was due to a snowstorm that caused icy roads and left Andrew Peters stuck with his Uber driver without water or food. Peters said he was heading home to Richmond from the airport Tuesday night when traffic suddenly stopped. When he finally made it home, Peters said Uber charged him an additional $400 plus the $200 fare from the airport. He also left the driver a $100 tip, leaving a total of $700.

“I had no way of knowing that I would be stuck in this traffic jam for that long, and I don’t feel like that’s fair because they have the directions. I have no say in which way Uber goes,”

Peters questioned why he was charged for something that was completely out of his control: “I’m still trying to find somebody to talk to understand why they feel like they could charge me this. “I’ll probably be banned from Uber but, you know, whatever,”

After disputing the charge, Uber refund Peters with the bill after recognizing what happened.

“We recognized that the prolonged highway shutdown was an extraordinary circumstance for him and the driver,”
