Twitter Permanently Bans Account Of Former KKK Leader David Duke

As Twitter tries to curb the spread of hateful content on its website, this Friday the social media company announced that it has permanently suspended the account of David Duke, a former leader of the white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan.

Twitter’s hateful conduct policy clearly states that any threats of attacks directed at people on the basis of their religion, race, or ethnicity are prohibited on its website. Duke’s account was reportedly filled with that content but Twitter didn’t specify what exactly he posted that triggered the ban.

However, BBC reported that Duke’s final tweet linked to an interview he had conducted with Germar Rudolf, who was convicted of Holocaust denial in Germany where it is a criminal offense. As the news site notes, his tweet posted on his scrubbed account promised to expose the “systemic racism lie,” with another about “incitement of violence against white people” by Jewish-owned media.

The YouTube channel for Duke, who was the leader of the white supremacist KKK from 1974 to 1978 — was also suspended in late June for violating the platform’s policies on hate speech.
