Truck Driver Sentenced To 110 Years In For Deadly Crash

A Houston truck driver will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was sentenced to 110 years in prison for a deadly crash that killed multiple people.

26-year-old Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, reportedly lost control of his semi truck near Denver, Colorado when he says the brakes failed. His truck hit stopped traffic causing a fiery crash that killed four and injured others.

According to KUSA, during an emotional statement Aguilera-Mederos told the judge he doesn’t know why he’s still alive while the four others are dead.

“I know that it has been hard and heartbreaking for everyone involved. Your honor, I don’t know why I’m alive,” he said tearfully.

In addition to the 110 years, Aguilera-Mederos was also given 30 years for 11 other charges.

Usually, the typical penalty in Colorado for reckless driving with serious bodily injury or death leads to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to $1,000. Vehicular homicide can get you two to six years behind bars, however, a judge can significantly increase the punishment for a conviction on that charge up to 24 years if there are “extraordinary aggravating circumstances.” Lawyers for Aguilera-Mederos believe he is being significantly overcharged.

“Hopefully the judge’s sentence provides a sense of justice to the victims, our community and everyone who was impacted by this tragedy,” the First Judicial DA’s Office said. “We greatly appreciate the service by the members of the jury and the extensive investigative efforts by the Lakewood Police Department and numerous other local and state agencies that assisted.”
