Would You Watch? Tom Hanks Says He’d Be Open To Appear In Movies After Death With AI Technology And Deepfakes

To ‘Forest Gump‘ actor Tom Hanks, he does not see his inevitable death being the end of his acting career. Instead, he is considering how artificial intelligence and deepfakes can help further his career posthumously.

While appearing on the BBC’s ‘The Adam Buxton Podcast,’ Hanks held a conversation where he theorized the advancements in technology allowing him to pop up in films via artificial intelligence and deepfakes – which are said to be heading to the Cannes Film Festival via the world premiere of ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.’

It is reported that the film uses AI in order to assist in de-aging actor Harrison Ford, so to allow him to better resemble how he looked in the Indiana Jones 1981 installment, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’

Speaking on AI, Hanks recalled the 2004 computer-animated and fantasy adventure Christmas movie, ‘The Polar Express,’ which he voiced 6 characters for, and which was directed by Robert Zemeckis.

The 66-year-old actor said, “The first time we did a movie that had a huge amount of our own data locked in a computer — literally what we looked like — was a movie called ‘The Polar Express.’ We saw this coming, we saw that there was going to be this ability to take zeros and ones from inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. That has only grown a billion-fold since then and we see it everywhere.”

Additionally, Tom Hanks noted that thanks to the advancements of technology, including AI and deepfakes, he and other creatives in the industry are able to pitch various movie ideas; like films that could see him playing a 32-year-old or younger, or even appear in the movie after death.

Hanks explained, “Anybody can now recreate themselves at any age they are by way of AI or deep fake technology. I could be hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it, but performances can go on and on and on and on. Outside the understanding of AI and deepfake, there’ll be nothing to tell you that it’s not me and me alone. And it’s going to have some degree of lifelike quality. That’s certainly an artistic challenge but it’s also a legal one.”

However, being that it is quite easy for studios to use AI to portray younger versions of the casted actors, or even cast actors posthumously, Hanks does note that organizations within the industry are taking the steps to make sure things are done legally.

The Oscar Award-winning actor said, “All of the guilds, all of the agencies, and all of the legal firms [are discussing] the legal ramifications of my face and my voice and everybody else’s being our intellectual property.”

He added, “Without a doubt people will be able to tell [that it’s AI], but the question is will they care? There are some people that won’t care, that won’t make that delineation.”
