Kayla and Nathan Dahl were sleeping when the fire occurred and couldn’t smell the smoke due to losing their sense of smell to COVID-19. However, their son Brandon walked through the blaze miraculously and woke the couple up when he entered their room. Kayla said her son told them, “mama, hot” but the couple initially assumed that the pajamas he was wearing were too hot for him.
Moments later, the couple noticed the flames in their Alvord home and quickly evacuated with their five children-including Brandon, to safety.

The family is currently staying with relatives until they can find a rental home and launched a GoFundMe to help with expenses. Kayla called the situation a miracle although her son hasn’t fully grasped his heroic act.
“I don’t think he quite understands the impact of what he did and the good thingthat he is,” Kayla said. “But he is relishing the abundance of attention. If we go to Walmart or the gas station and somebody recognizes us from the news, they’ll pat him on the back and try to shake his hand [saying], ‘You’re a hero! I’m so happy to meet a hero!’ ”
