The Weeknd Will Revert To His Birth Name, Abel Tesfaye: “This Is Something That I Have To Do… I’m Going Through A Cathartic Path Right Now”

Looks like The Weeknd is following through on his plans to change his stage name.

Fans of the entertainer noticed this week that he has gone ahead and changed his name on his some of social media accounts to his real name, Abel Tesfaye. The change is part of a wider plan to “kill The Weeknd,” as Tesfaye previously told @WMagazine in an interview published earlier this month.

In the cover story he explained, “I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he said.
“It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”

While speaking with the outlet, Abel also revealed that his upcoming album will possibly be the closing chapter to the “The Weeknd” era. “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd,” he told W Magazine. “This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”

Now, this isn’t the first time The Weeknd has publicly shared the idea of changing his stage name. Last year, while tweeting back to fans, before the release of his “Out of Time” music video, the singer tweeted, “You guys are hilarious. I feel like I should change my stage name to ABEL at this point lol.” He then added that he’ll “maybe pull a YE and just legally change my name to ABEL. no last name. Like Madonna or Cher or Prince. I don’t know it seems like a lot.”

Bc I liked referring him to Abel knowing others didn’t know he’s The Weeknd.” Another added, “The Weeknd trying to change his stage name in the peak of his career is like when Snoop Dogg tried to change his to Snoop Lion 😂” A third said, “Saw this interview and trust me the day Weeknd will change his name and kill this name THE WEEKND the day I will stop listening to him on god. A fourth Twitter user added, “The Weeknd is everything, and listening to u from last 10 year’s NGL don’t do that please 🙏🏻”
