The Weeknd Believes He Inspired Usher’s 2012 Hit Song “Climax”
In the latest cover story for Variety, The Weekend discussed his successful career and how he was able to create his unique mixed alternative and R&B sound, which we now hear in many other artists’ music today.
While speaking with the magazine, he looked back on his classic 2010 mixtape “House of Balloons” and pointed out how he influenced others in the game:
“House of Balloons literally changed the sound of pop music before my eyes,” The 30-year-old said. “I heard ‘Climax,’ that [2012] Usher song, and was like, ‘Holy f**k, that’s a Weeknd song.’ It was very flattering, and I knew I was doing something right, but I also got angry. But the older I got, I realized it’s a good thing.”

His honest comments drew mixed feelings from fans online. While some people agreed with The Weekend, others didn’t think he had any influence on Usher’s hit song that was produced by Diplo and snagged a Grammy. Here’s how some people on Twitter reacted to his interview:
