Rapper Malik B, one of the original members of The Roots, has passed away at 47.

The band confirmed Malik B’s death Wednesday on an Instagram post with a photo of Mailk B, Questlove, and Black Thought. The caption reads, “It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit. May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, His loving brotherhood, and his innovation as of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss.”
Basit joined The Roots during the late 1980s with Questlove and Black Thought and remained in the group until 2002 during the making of their album Phrenology. He released a solo album in 2005 titled “Street Assault” and an EP titled “Psychological” in 2006.
