Tennessee Man Sets Girlfriend On Fire After She Tried To Break Up With Him

A Tennessee man is currently being charged with attempted second-degree murder for setting his girlfriend on fire after she tried to end their relationship.

Police say, Kenneth Upshaw, 38 poured gasoline on his girlfriend and flicked a lit cigarette at her after she wanted to break things off with him. causing her to suffer from second-degree burns to her neck, face, arms and chest.

Police met with the victim, Rebecca Briggs after she was taken to a local hospital to ask her a few questions. Police say, it was difficult to understand what she was saying due to the burns on her face. But it was reported that Kenneth told her “if I can’t be with you, then nobody can”.

Briggs explained that she wasn’t sure how the fire was put out but she was able to get away from Kenneth and get the car to drive to a friends house before she went to the hospital the next day.

Authorities went back to the house where the incident took place and located a 2016 Honda Accord with burns to the back of the car, a melted bumper and a red gas canister.

According to reports, Briggs and Upshaw were not residents of the home the incident took place at. Briggs just happened to come to the house earlier in the day. The homeowner says they were unaware of what was going on in the driveway, but someone allegedly told the homeowner that a car was on fire in the driveway. The man has stated that he a friend are the ones who put the fire out.

“It was so bad. I mean, he just burned the entire rear end and part of the driver’s side of the rear and it started hitting where the gas tank was, and I thought it was going to explode,” the man expressed to WREG.
