A former teacher from Oregon has been sentenced to serve seven years in prison after confessing to having sex with a teen student and becoming obsessed with the underage victim.

31-year-old Lisa DeFluri pleaded guilty to 11 counts of student sexual abuse during a hearing at Lane County Circuit Court on Thursday and her attorney argued that his client should have received the two-year sentencing since similar cases in the state were issued probationary sentences or prison terms that lasted less than four years. Before the sentencing, a detective said DeFluri was obsessed with the female teen student and kept love notes along with photos inside her home and classroom.
The victim’s mother said DeFluri was a family friend and thought she could be trusted with her daughter since she worked as a math teacher at Thurston High School. DeFluri was also coaching the girls’ basketball team and knew the victim since she was 12. “At 11 to 12 years old, Lisa had set eyes on our child and family and the grooming began then,” she added.

DeFluri was recently divorced from her husband and started an illegal relationship with the victim from July 2020 to December 2020. She apologized in court before she was sentenced to the near-decade prison sentence.
“The words ‘I’m sorry’ do not undo the damage I’ve done to [the victim] and her entire family or the suffering that I have inflicted on my own son.”
