UPDATE: Father Of Jacob Blake Says His Son Is Now Paralyzed From The Waist Down After Police Shooting In Wisconsin
The father of victim Jacob Blake — the black man who was shot in the back multiple times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has given an update on his son’s condition.
While speaking with the Chicago Sun-Times, the father, who is also named Jacob Blake, says his son is now paralyzed from the waist down following the shooting that occurred over the weekend. He also told the newspaper that he learned that officers had actually shot his son eight times on Sunday instead of 7, and added that he saw the horrific video of the shooting online a few minutes later. Mr. Blake said his son now has a total of “eight holes” in his body. Although he is paralyzed, he said doctors don’t know if the paralysis will be permanent. “What justified all those shots? What justified doing that in front of my grandsons? What are we doing?” He said referring to the officer shooting his son several times in front of his kids after he tried to break up a fight.
The elder Blake also shared with the outlet that he now is making the drive from Charlotte, North Carolina, to be with his son in the hospital Tuesday: “I want to put my hand on my son’s cheek and kiss him on his forehead, and then I’ll be OK,” his father said. “I’ll kiss him with my mask. The first thing I want to do is touch my son,” Chicago Sun-Times quotes.
This latest shooting of another unarmed Black man resulted in protests in Kenosha, which escalated to violence. It started Sunday
and continued Monday, but peacefully as people marched through the city.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers issued a statement denouncing “excessive use of force” by police and in support of the man and his family; pledging in the coming days to demand action from state elected officials “who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.”
