Suspect Charged In The Fatal Stabbing Of 15-Year-Old Stockton High School Student Alyicia Reynaga

A man has been charged for murder in connection to the random and fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old Stockton, CA high school student, identified as Alyicia Reynaga. She was a freshman student at Stagg High School and played on the softball team.

Reynaga’s killer has been captured and identified as 52-year-old Anthony Gray. He’s since been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

The Incident

Stockton Unified School District says the incident occurred on Monday (Apr. 18) around 11 a.m. in front of the Stagg High School campus. The Stockton Police Department say the suspect, Gray, drove up to the front of the school, parked his car and exited it.

Police say Gray continued to walk over to the student, Reynaga and began stabbing her several times. Officials says the suspect was immediately detained after the stabbing. Meanwhile, Reynaga was rushed to the hospital, where she later succumb to her injuries and passed away.

Stockton Unified School District Superintendent John Ramirez Jr. said Gray attacked Reynaga before security and staff could stop him. Ramirez Jr. says, “It happened so quick that they weren’t able to stop it, but they were there immediately, hence why the assailant was able to be detained and taken into custody so quickly.” After the incident, Stagg High School officials immediately placed the campus on lockdown. The District says students and faculty were dismissed at 2:17 p.m. at a separate exit. At the time, they noted that the motive for the attack is still under investigation.

Stockton Police & Mayor Speak

Stockton Police Department officials have since taken over the investigation and they say the incident currently appears to be random. They also noted that a weapon has since been recovered.

Also, Stockton Mayor Kevin J. Lincoln spoke out after the shooting and had this to say:

“My heart is shattered by the violence that ended the life of a young student today. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. No child should ever have to experience or witness such senseless acts of violence. The safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance for the SUSD and the City of Stockton. We will work together to identify additional measures and resources promoting public safety and services for our students. SUSD Public Safety Department immediately responded to the incident and Stockton PD now has the suspect in custody. This is an active homicide investigation. We must pray for all of our students, families, faculty and staff as we grieve this heavy loss.”
