Steve Martin reveals that he turned down an offer to portray Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live. The offer from Lorne Micheals came from social media users who wanted Martin to take on the role after Vice President Kamala Harris selected Walz as her running mate for the 2024 election.

While speaking with the LA Times, Martin revealed that Michaels extended an official invitation on Wednesday to join SNL’s fiftieth season. “I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no. I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses,” the comedian explained. Despite his multiple appearances on SNL, Martin felt the role needed someone who did a better job at impressions.

“It’s ongoing. It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re gonna find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling,” he continued. According to TOO FAB, Martin hosted the show 16 times, making him the most frequent host next to Alec Baldwin, who has 17 hosting appearances. Additionally, Martin has other commitments that significantly influenced his decision to decline the offer.
