Stephen A. Smith Issues Apology To Jasmine Crockett

Stephen A. Smith came through with an apology this week after catching heat for comments he made about Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and how she handles her political game.

Previously, Smith criticized Crockett’s choice of language when clapping back at Republicans, describing it as “rhetoric for the streets.” He questioned how that kind of talk could really serve the people she represents, suggesting it might do more harm than good.

But his words didn’t sit well with folks. Social media erupted, calling for Smith’s removal from his gigs—including his SiriusXM show and ESPN’s First Take. The internet had time that day, and they weren’t holding back.
Smith initially brushed off the backlash, calling the cancellation attempts “immature.” But this week, he decided to take accountability. On Wednesday’s episode of his SiriusXM show, the sports analyst and media personality issued an apology that showed a different side of him—one more self-aware and respectful of the bigger picture.

“I get it now, with [President] Trump feeding into that nonsense, giving him fodder or ammunition, to continue to go out there and talk about our Black women that way. I got it. I don’t like that at all. I don’t want to be associated with nothing like that, and I apologize because I respect the hell out of Jasmine Crockett and what she has accomplished,” Smith said, according to Mediaite. “I absolutely do. And I appreciate the fact that she feels compelled to fight the way that she’s fought, the way that she fights because of what she’s dealing with.”

Smith’s Political Commentary Sparks Conversation

Smith has been known for his strong sports opinions, but lately, he’s been stepping deeper into political waters. His bold takes on social issues and the 2024 election have raised eyebrows, with some fans wondering if he’s gearing up for something bigger.

His critiques of Crockett came from a place of concern—at least, that’s what he tried to explain—but the tone and timing landed wrong. Many online felt he was undermining a Black woman using her voice in a political arena often hostile toward her. And when you’re a household name like Stephen A., your words don’t just echo—they ripple.

In his apology, Smith acknowledged how his words might’ve unintentionally added to the same kind of criticism that’s often unfairly thrown at Black women in positions of power. That’s a rare moment of humility from someone who’s built a career on never backing down.

Jasmine Crockett’s Response and Ongoing Impact

Crockett hasn’t directly responded to Smith’s apology yet, but her supporters have praised his willingness to acknowledge the bigger picture. Crockett, who’s been gaining national attention for her fiery exchanges with GOP members, has been a voice for a generation that’s tired of playing nice just to be heard.

Her unapologetic style resonates with a lot of voters who see her as authentic—someone who speaks their language. And while Smith might’ve fumbled the tone at first, his apology shows that he’s open to growth, which is something this whole political culture could use more of.
