The entertainment world is still processing the sudden loss of actress Hayden Panettiere, and now Solange Knowles is adding her voice to the chorus of heartbreak.
The Grammy-winning artist took to her Instagram Stories this Tuesday morning to pay tribute to her former “Bring It On: All or Nothing” co-star. In her tribute, Solange spoke of the parallels between their lives and praised how openly Hayden lived out her struggles in the public eye, describing her journey as one marked by vulnerability and a relentless pursuit of healing. She said she honored the work they built together, work that ended up touching more people than either of them could have imagined as two young girls simply trying to keep their eyes on the light. She closed her message wishing Hayden peace, “because you are so deserving of it.”
As we previously reported, Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive Sunday afternoon at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, where she’d been staying temporarily. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, first responders arrived to a 911 call reporting a woman in cardiac arrest and attempted advanced life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy conducted the next day found no signs of trauma, though the official cause and manner of death remain pending toxicology results, a process officials say could take up to three months. Dispatch audio referenced a possible overdose, but nothing has been confirmed. Police have said there’s no indication of foul play.
For Solange, the news clearly landed close to home. Back in 2006, she and Hayden shared the screen as cheerleading rivals-turned-teammates in “Bring It On: All or Nothing,” a film that was a low-key cultural touchstone for a generation of Black girls who saw themselves reflected in Solange’s character, Camille.
That “radical truth” Solange referenced wasn’t just poetic language, it was Hayden’s whole story. In her memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released just this past May, Panettiere wrote candidly about the scars of growing up in Hollywood, her battle with alcohol addiction, and the postpartum depression that nearly broke her after the birth of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. She’d also spoken publicly in recent years about her addiction to opioids, calling it a period where she hit rock bottom before fighting her way back.
Hayden’s death comes just three years after her family buried her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in February 2023 at only 28 from complications tied to an enlarged heart. Hayden later admitted that losing her only sibling changed her both mentally and physically, telling People magazine she felt like she’d lost half her soul and that she’d never fully get over it.
Now the Panettiere family is grieving twice over. Her father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement remembering his daughter as an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to everyone who knew her, and to millions who only knew her from the screen.
As family, friends, and fans continue to mourn the investigation into her death continues. We will continue to keep you updated as more details come forth.
