Social Media Reacts To South Texas High School Team Name ‘Cotton Pickers’
A South Texas High School is going viral after news coverage was provided for their football season opener on Friday (Sept. 4), showcasing the side-eying team name, “Cotton Pickers.”
While some residents of Robstown, a western suburb of Corpus Christi, have “embraced” the team name and mascot, as it’s been in use for years now, the school is now going viral as other citizens across America catch wind of the controversial name.
After KIII 3 Sports Director Chris Thomasson tweeted coverage of the season opener, the tweet has since gone viral, spawning multiple conversations and reactions from the Twitterverse. One user writes, “Redskins: We have finally got rid of the most racist name in sports. Cotton pickers: hold my bale.” Another says, “If you didn’t think 2020 was weird enough the “ redskins “ “ Indians “ “ and chiefs “ were all questioned at team names but the cotton pickers is alive and well lmao.”

Again, I’ve said the name should have been changed for years.
I shouldn’t have put the mascot in the tweet and for that I apologize. I haven’t said it on air here in forever. Believe me, I’m not “celebrating” anything.
But don’t let narrative get in the way @ComplexSports. https://t.co/CaDgMPr3Tf

It seems this has been a conversation in this district before, but the majority Latino population doesn't see "cotton pickers" as a slur. 🤷🏽♀️
"We're Latinos. We're migrant workers, and we picked cotton," Rodriguez said. "My parents picked cotton."https://t.co/VPKzuQ4ys8
