On February 23, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced on Twitter that RiRi would be performing her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack record “Lift Me Up,” live at the 95th Oscars Awards on March 12. In addition to performing at the event, Rihanna will also be featured as a first-time nominee in the Best Original Song category during the award show.
Rihanna’s loyal army of fans quickly mobilized in the thread of the announcement, expressing a range of emotions from excitement to overall dissatisfaction.
A stan account for RiRi seemingly alluded to The Academy inviting Rihanna to perform at the event as a ploy to pander to a larger viewing audience.
“Do not use her for audience if she’s not taking the award home,” the user wrote.
Another user also suggested that Rihanna’s performance was yet another fleeting attempt to cover up homogeny at the Oscars.
“Promoting the few black people nominated just to have them lose to white folks. Are black folks tap dancing on the show too?” the user tweeted.
One user wrote their belief that Rihanna is the people’s champ while expressing excitement for her performance.
“@rihana for the people . Can’t wait to tune in. I love it,” they wrote in the tweet.

News of Rihanna’s upcoming Oscars performance follows multiple reports that the Grammy Award-winning vocalist is planning a grand wedding with A$AP Rocky in her native Barbados ahead of the potential release of her new album later this year. According to a Radar Online exclusive, a source close to RiRi says she is more focused than ever on her family, and jumping the broom with Rocky than she is on performing.
“Throwing a wedding and having another baby are Rihanna’s main focus at the moment,” the source told Radar Online. “Agreeing to do the Super Bowl definitely reinvigorated her love of performing, but it still doesn’t compare to what she has at home. Luckily, A$AP’s on board, too.”
Another source provided a number of purported details on reports of planning for the wedding, remarking how Rihanna wants her nuptials to be a “super glam event,” where she is surrounded by family and her famous friends such as Adele, JAY Z and more.
“It will be a whole weekend affair,” the source said.”RiRi’s wedding will be over-the-top. She wants it to be in Barbados, a super glam event, but she also wants to be able to run around barefoot.”
