Social Media Blasts Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis After He Calls State ‘God’s Waiting Room’ For Dying Seniors

During a briefing about the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sparked outrage after saying his state was as “God’s waiting room” given the large senior citizen population in the Sunshine State.

“Florida is ground zero for the nursing home — we’re God’s waiting room,” DeSantis said. “We have a huge number of facilities, a huge number of residents.” As the Daily News points out, “God’s waiting room” is a reference to an old joke about Florida being a favored destination for retirees. However, the term struck some folks as inappropriate given the high number of nursing home deaths during the coronavirus pandemic.

One Twitter user said, labeled DeSantis as a ‘POS’ – the acronym for ‘piece of s***’ – and said he should be held responsible for every senior citizen that dies in Florida. Another said,

“This is a shameful statement. What a lack of decency.” Meanwhile, there were a few folks that came to his defense with one saying, ‘If you’re a [Republican], you’re not allowed to have a personality, apparently,’ they tweeted.

DeSantis went on to brag that the state acting swiftly in handling the pandemic as it has “only 1.2” coronavirus deaths per 100,000 nursing home residents.
