Duffy opened up about a tragic moment that caused her hiatus on Instagram. The singer says she was raped, drugged, and held captive for a few days.

According to Page Six, Duffy wrote in an Instagram post that she wanted to let her fans know why she was out of the spotlight for a while. She stated she was raped, drugged and held captive against her will for a few days but ensured that she is safe and survived the horrific ordeal.

“Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why. “The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course, I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

Duffy is well known for her 2008 smash hit “Mercy” and said she didn’t want to talk about the sexual assault through her music and felt now was the time to open up about it:

“You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke,”

The Welsh singer says she will discuss the situation further in an interview and asked for her fans to give her and her family privacy since releasing the news.
