Selena Gomez is absolutely not here for the messy narratives so she’s speaking out to clear the air. Social media had a field day after fans thought they caught the Rare Beauty mogul throwing major shade at her longtime bestie, Taylor Swift.

So what the heck happened? Well, it all started when Taylor popped up courtside at Madison Square Garden for Game 4 of the NBA Finals, screaming and celebrating the New York Knicks’ historic 29-point comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs alongside actress Mariska Hargitay. MTV posted the high-energy flick on Instagram, and Selena raised eyebrows everywhere by simply dropping a “lol” in the comment section.

Things got even messier when a screenshot of a text chain from Selena’s story started circulating. In the messages, the Texas-born singer congratulated the game but added, “so funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol.” The internet immediately ran with it, assuming Selena was calling Taylor a bandwagon fan and hinting at some serious beef between the pop superstars.

Selena woke up to a blowing-up phone and wasted zero time shutting the rumors down on her Instagram Stories. She made it clear that she is a proud, ride-or-die Spurs fan and that the commentary was nothing more than friendly trash-talk aimed at a completely different group of people in her life.

“Woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page. Second, I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking fun at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not, I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise.”

To wrap it all up and put a final stamp on the drama, Selena added a quick reality check for everyone overanalyzing her every move, writing, “Also.. it’s a basketball game.”

So there you have it, no friendship fallout, no hidden beef, just a Texas girl hurting over her team losing a tough one in the Finals. Everybody can officially log off and take a breath.
