Saweetie has been killing the game with her hits like ICY Girl, My Type, Back To The Streets, and more, but the rapper admits that it wasn’t all love when she first started out. During her conversation with the magazine, she looked back on one of her first big interviews.

While appearing on Hot97 back in 2018, Sawetie dropped a freestyle but the hosts were not impressed. Ebro called her lyrics “basic” and said she needed to do more to impress him. The 27-year-old explained, “It was a really dark point in my life. I went from being so loved so quickly because of ‘Icy Grl’ to, on my first promo run, well, you saw the interview. The script flipped really quick, like night and day. I was like, Wait…” Saweetie went on to reveal, “I had PTSD from that. Because ‘Icy Grl’ was so popular, I was being booked at huge festivals,” she points out. “I was literally thrown into it.”

Instead of being hard on herself, Saweetie says she’s actually thankful for these moments: “I’m really grateful for my start. Because the mistakes, the struggle, the grind—it allows me to appreciate the rewards that come now because I know what it feels like to sleep in motels, to drive and do promo, to be stressed out.” Check out her full interview here.
