Saudi authorities are attempting to arrest a female rapper because she released a music video titled “Mecca Girl” which praises women as “powerful and beautiful”.

Asayel, who is Eritrean origin, posted the video Bint Makkah (“Girl from Mecca”) on her Youtube channel last week. In the video she praises Meccan woman from the Holy City as powerful and beautiful. The video is not provocative and just shows shots of young women wearing hijab and dancing to the song in a coffee shop. They wear not breaking any rules.

Saudi authorities tweeted a decision to arrest the people who made the video adding that it “offends the customs and traditions of the people of Mecca and contradicts the identity and traditions of its noble children”.

Asayel Slay’s account has since been suspended from YouTube.

Many were outraged that the young artist was facing backlash for expressing herself, one tweet read, “It’s the only rap song that doesn’t contain a single obscenity, insult, pornographic scene, nudity, hashish or smoking and the rapper is even wearing the hijab.”

“The girl faces arrest because the song doesn’t suit new Saudi Arabia or old.”
