Rihanna Explains Her 2021 Met Gala Look: “The Black Hoodie Is Usually The Thing That We Are Incriminated By As Black people. I Wanted To Empower That”
Rihanna blessed fans on Monday as she returned to the Met Gala and graced the red carpet with a look that we can’t stop talking about.
The superstar arrived fashionably late but stunned in an all-black ruffled Balenciaga overcoat and matching beanie. Adding a nice touch to her fit, Rihanna wore a studded mesh headpiece with the perfect silver jewelry. Her boo A$AP Rocky, who was right by her side, wore a colorful quilt-inspired look by ERL and rocked a fresh suit underneath.
While speaking with reporter @giapeppers from @essence magazine, Rihanna explained what inspired her amazing look and the important meaning behind it: “The Black Hoodie is usually the thing that we are incriminated by as Black people. I wanted to empower that and take it and make it mine and make it fashion.” 👏🏾👏🏾
Other stars who popped out making a political statement were Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who wore a white dress (by Brother Vellies) that read “Tax the rich” in bright red. Model Cara Delevingne delivered a Dior look with a vest reading, “Peg the Patriarchy.” While wearing a crystalized Christian Cowan dress, Saweetie had a Black American heritage flag and Filipino flag behind her. She told E! News, “That’s what makes me an American girl.”
