R. Kelly Prison Beatdown: Lawyers Say Guards Neglected His Fears & Suggest They Set Him Up
After his Chicago prison beatdown last month, R. Kelly and his lawyers say the guards neglected the disgraced singer’s fears and suggest that they set him up for the attack.
Kelly’s attorneys, Steve Greenberg and Nicole Blank Becker say most of the static toward their client, from other inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, stems from some of the prison guards telling inmates that the numerous, back-to-back lockdowns were due to protests outside the facility for R. Kelly. The legal team notes that guards usually do not make such announcements, which may have lead to the increased animosity toward their client, ending up with one inmate going after him.

Additionally, Kelly’s legal team says three weeks before the attack, he overheard his alleged attacker outside of his cell on the phone, seemingly planning the beatdown. Subsequently, he expressed his concerns the next day to a prison guard, but clearly to no avail. Kelly also claims he told two other guards that he feared for his safety 2-3 weeks ahead of his attack. In addition, he told a doctor after the attack that he’d wished the guards would cease from blaming him for the lockdowns, because other inmate were becoming angry.
