Purdue University Condemns ‘Police Brutality’ After Viral Video Shows Violent Arrest Of Black Student

Student Government officials at Purdue University have condemned “police brutality” after viewing a viral video showing the violent arrest of a Black student.

Last Friday (Feb. 4), junior Adonis Tuggle was arrested after a bystander called the police on him — Tuggle says he and his girlfriend were arguing. Upon police arrival, things quickly escalated, forcing Tuggle’s girlfriend to pull out her phone and begin recording the violent takedown.

In the video, Tuggle is heard screaming through the pain of the cop shoving his elbow into his neck. Tuggle screams to his girlfriend for help, yelling to the cop, “You’re choking me. You’re choking me.” Tuggle’s girlfriend records while yelling at the officer — identified as Purdue Officer Jon Selke — to remove his elbow. The officer proceeds to threaten the girlfriend, claiming he’ll tase her if she continues to interfere. Since, the Purdue Student Government has spoken out against the incident, standing against “this aggressive act of police brutality.”

They wholly wrote, “Purdue Student Government is aware of last Friday’s attack on Adonis Tuggle, a Purdue student who was choked and pinned against a mound of snow and ice by Purdue Officer Jon Selke. No matter the circumstances, none of us should ever have to undergo or see any of our peers experience this aggressive act of police brutality.”
