Police in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania said they found the abandoned dog at the airport sitting in a stroller on Friday (August 4) at around 5:30 a.m. They said the pup was a French bulldog and that the female passenger told airport staff that it was an emotional-support animal in order to bring it on the plane. However, employees doubled down on her needing to put the dog in a crate if she wanted to fly.

Taking to its official account on Facebook, officials with the Allegheny County Police Department confirmed that the dog was discovered by officers at Pittsburgh International Airport. They said after discovering a microchip on the dog, they tried several times to contact its owner by phone, but all to no avail.

Police then opened an investigation, during which time they learned about the dog’s owner being denied access to board her flight unless she had a crate to fly. Without a cage for the dog, the woman dumped the pup near the airport’s short-term parking and then went back inside the airport to get on her flight.

As for what happened with the dog upon rescuing it from the airport parking lot, Allegheny County Police Department officials also said that they “contacted the state dog warden to safely turn over the dog.”

Officials also said that they are fully expecting an animal abandonment charge to be filed in this case by the state dog warden. In the state of Pennsylvania, it is illegal to abandon a dog. Under the state law, convicted owners can face fines of up to $1,000.

Speaking with Insider on Tuesday (August 8), Allegheny County Police Department spokesperson James Madalinsky further explained that the female passenger was flying to a resort and that she pretended her dog was an emotional-support animal. Madalinsky confirmed that airline officials, however, were not convinced and told her she still needed a dog crate to fly.
