Philippines Man Dies After Police Allegedly Forced Him To Do 300 Squats For Breaking COVID-19 Curfew
Darren Manaog Peñaredondo, a 28-year-old Philippines man, has reportedly died after police allegedly forced him to complete 300 squats as punishment for breaking COVID-19 curfew rules.
It’s reported that on April 1, village guards in General Trias, Cavite caught Peñaredondo while he was out after the 6 p.m. cutoff buying drinking water. It’s noted that the town has a strict curfew in place from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., as the country’s reported nearly 800,000 cases of coronavirus, with 13,425 deaths — making the Philippines the second highest hotspot in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia.

The man’s partner, Reichelyn Balce, says Peñaredondo and another curfew violator were taken to a shopping plaza and forced to do 100 “pumping” exercises similar to squats, and if they were not in sync, they had to repeat. After the grueling experience, Peñaredondo, struggling to walk and in pain, made his way back home around 8 a.m. the following morning. Eventually, he suffered a seizure later in the evening and was briefly revived, but ended up passing away around 10 p.m. An investigation is now underway, per general Trias mayor Anthony Ferrer.
Ferrer said in a Facebook post, “In connection with the unexpected passing of Mr. Darren Manaog Peñaredondo, we immediately ordered the Chief of our police to conduct a fair investigation about the incident of arrest and the seemingly torturing him. Let’s hope that we have immediate clarity on the events and give peace of mind and will to the Peñaredondo family.”
