Over 100 Arrested, 13 Officers Injured Amid Chicago Looting

Chaos erupted early Monday in downtown Chicago as widespread looting and gunfire broke out. According to NBC, the unrest began at around 12:20 a.m., when police were called to reports of a large mob scene on Michigan Avenue. People gathered outside stores like the Saks Fifth Avenue and Coach, with hundreds of people yelling and throwing things at officers.

Just before 5 a.m., a Chicago police spokesman released a tweet stating that
shots had been fired at officers who returned fire near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Lake Street. According to police spokesman Tom Ahern, no officers were shot but a squad car was hit, he said. It was not known if anyone in the gunman’s car was shot.

It also wasn’t immediately clear what led to the unrest, which began shortly after midnight. However, it was noted that hours earlier, dozens of people had faced off with police after officers shot and wounded a person Sunday in the city’s Englewood neighborhood.

Police Superintendent David Brown said more than 100 people were arrested Monday following the looting and unrest. As a result, a total of 13 officers were reportedly injured. Brown said it “was not an organized protest” but labeled is “an incident of pure criminality.”
“This was straight up, felony criminal conduct,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “This was an assault on our city.”

As Yahoo notes, those arrested were expected to face charges including looting, disorderly conduct, battery against police.
