Oregon Man Leaves His Family Broke After Throwing $200K Out Of His Car To ‘Bless Others’

It’s always good to think about less fortunate people and to help out where you can but at the expense of your family going broke? No, ma’am. According to a new report via Insider, an Oregon man named Colin Davis McCarthy felt incredibly generous when he lowered his car window on the I-5 freeway on Tuesday and threw $200,000 worth of $100 bills outside his car because he felt generous and wanted to “bless others.” Well, it turns out that the huge sum was actually taken from bank accounts McCarthy shared with his family, who told Oregon State Police he’s practically left them without any money after taking out their funds.

A police report filed on Tuesday confirms that a call was made to the freeway of a man throwing out money from his car. When he was confronted by law enforcement officials, he confessed to the stunt, saying he had gotten rid of a whopping $200k, though cops couldn’t confirm the actual amount since there “wasn’t really a way” to calculate the figure distributed to people. Video footage that has surfaced online did show strangers picking up $100 bills, so it’s more than likely that McCarthy was, in fact, telling the truth.

It took about an hour for all the strangers to pick up the money he had willingly thrown out of his car, with police noting how he told them he wanted to make their day by gifting them with free money. Oregon State Police Lt. Andrews said in a statement that the bystanders had done a “pretty good job of cleaning it all up,” as the aforementioned outlet aded that the generous move led to heavy traffic, with people jumping out their vehicle to grab themselves a $100 bill — or two.

“The northbound lane was bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching for miles due to people pulling off and re-entering the freeway from the shoulder and searching the ground,” one onlooker said. “Some people were running from shoulder to shoulder of the interstate waiting for cars to pass.”

Given that it was fairly dark when McCarthy was throwing the money out of his car window, cops urged him to stop after confronting him, stating he was putting people’s lives at risk by having them run on the freeway for money.

And while he wasn’t charged for the incident, his family has since spoken out, saying they were stunned to find their bank accounts emptied out — with police sadly telling them there’s no chance they can get their money back.

“Because it’s shared, they both have equal interests in the money,” Andrews expressed.
