Elon Musk received a not-so-warm welcome on Sunday night after being brought on stage at Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock’s comedy show in San Francisco. As seen in video footage that’s widely circulating on social media, when Elon made his appearance on the Chase Center stage, the crowd erupted by heavily booing the Tesla CEO, which led Dave to try and lighten the mood through a string of jokes about the audience’s negative reaction.
“It sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience,” Dave quipped, referencing the thousands of people who were fired from Twitter shortly after Elon had acquired the company in a $44 billion deal last month. “All these people who are booing, and I’m just pointing out the obvious, you have terrible seats.”

In another effort to seemingly save the world’s richest man’s pride, Dave joked that the people booing were poor and that the hint of disapproval after seeing Elon stepping on stage was pointless since “his whole business model is f**k Earth, I’m leaving anyway.” The 48-year-old continued that the audience was free to boo all they want because Elon had given him a jetpack for Christmas last year, but whenever the latter tried to speak, the boos flared up again.
“Dave, what should I say?” Elon asked Dave as he stood on stage and somewhat shamefaced by the response he’d received upon gracing the stage. “Don’t say nothing. It’ll only spoil the moment,” Dave replied, Do you hear that sound, Elon? That’s the sound of pending civil unrest. I can’t wait to see what store you decimate next, motherf***er. You shut the f**k up.”
It wasn’t long before Dave and Elon began trending on Twitter as people reacted to the 18,000-capacity stadium showing their disapprobation of seeing the tech mogul in their presence.

While it’s unclear to make out how many people were booing when Elon came out, one person who had attended the sold out show, tweeted, “Was at the Dave Chapelle show at SF tonight and who comes on but Elon Musk! A good 80% of the stadium boos. 18k people. and he withers. Like absolutely turns into a corncob. ‘What should I say??’ He says Dave tries to salvage the situation but to no avail.”
The awkward onstage moment comes just days after Elon confirmed Twitter’s character limit will be increasing from 280 to 4,000 in the foreseeable future, while the social media platform’s subscription service, Twitter Blue, will see its monthly fee soar from $7.99 to $11.
