Oklahoma Students Pulled From Classes For Wearing Black Lives Matter Shirts

Many parents were left outraged and forced to protest after a couple of Ardmore, Oklahoma students were pulled from their classes for wearing Black Lives Matter shirts. It’s reported that 8-year-old third grader Ben Stapleton and his 5-year-old brother were pulled from their classes at Charles Evans Elementary School after wearing BLM shirts.

Prior to this incident, a couple days before, Stapleton was pulled from his P.E. class and told by his principal to turn his shirt inside out before he could participate. The boy said, “It made me mad and sad.” After the first incident, Ardmore Superintendent Kim Holland told Stapleton’s mom, Jordan Herbert, that he wouldn’t be disciplined if he respectfully refused to turn the shirt inside out. Herbert says, “Y’all know he knows nothing about politics or his rights, so y’all make him turn it inside out because you don’t like it.”

Following the conversation, Herbert sent three of her children into school with the shirts, which led to her 8-year-old being pulled from class again and her 5-year-old as well. Herbert told the principal to refer to the Superintendent who told her it wasn’t a problem if her children respectfully declined. However, the Superintendent clarifies that all political clothing is discouraged as it disrupts the learning process — “I understand what she is saying, but school is not the place to have all that, y’know political back and forth and upheaval. We’re trying to teach kids things like reading and writing.”
