An Oklahoma mother is suing her daughter’s school after claiming the young girl was “severely beaten” by a transgender student in the bathroom.
Oklahoma Mother Sues School Claiming Daughter Was ‘Severely Beaten’ By Transgender Student In Bathroom
The mother recently filed a lawsuit against her local school district after her 15-year-old daughter was allegedly “severely beaten” by a 17-year-old transgender student who was also using the girl’s bathroom at Edmond Memorial High School.
According to the mother’s lawsuit, the incident occurred on October 26, 2022, and the family is seeking $75,000 in damages for “severe physical and mental injuries, severe physical and mental pain and suffering, and severe emotional distress” that the mother claims her daughter suffered at school.
In the lawsuit, it is alleged that the transgender student, identified as student “A,” entered the girls’ restroom at the school and spoke to a female student. Shortly after, the two students began arguing with one another, and a physical fight ensued.
The lawsuit continued to claim that the student victim, identified as “V,” told police that she was speaking with her friends in the girls’ bathroom when student “A” went up to her with a question. When “A” told “V” that she didn’t want to speak to her and why, “A” got angry and asked her if she “wanted to fight.”
“A” then allegedly hit “V” in the face and continued to hit, kick and pull “V’s” hair. “V” then told police that “A” was so strong and the punch thrown was so hard that she was left unable to fight back.
One of “V’s” friends claimed that they tried to help her, but was also hit in the face twice by “A.” Another witness claimed that they were so scared and concerned about “V” because her attacker was “a man.”
The lawsuit also alleges that the transgender student had “made previous threats of violence” against the 15-year-old victim at the school. It is also revealed that local police searched the 17-year-old student for any weapons after making threats against the victim, which were “reported by another student.”
In the lawsuit, the victim’s mother also cited a law that Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed on May 25, 2022; which requires students at all Oklahoma public schools to “use restrooms that match the sex listed on their birth certificates.”
When police arrived, officers noticed that one victim had visible injuries to her “eye, face and head with a possible concussion.”
Elsewhere, Angela Grunewald, who is the Superintendent at Edmond Public Schools, released a statement occurred, and after it was subsequently posted as a video to YouTube back in December 2022.
Grunewald said, “You may ask yourself how can that happen? It’s hard to explain, but if a parent comes in and enrolls their child as a certain gender, and when you look at that child by all social norms they look and present themselves as that gender, it’s not something that you would question.”
Speaking to Governor Stitt’s law on transgender students using the bathroom that aligns with the gender on their birth certificates, Grunewald added, “In high school, birth certificates are not required to start school. So there was no birth certificate in the (student’s) file at the time to verify one way or another.”
