Oklahoma Becomes 16th State To Ban Gender-Affirming Surgery And Puberty Blockers For Children Under 18

It is reported that on Monday (May 1), Republican Governor J. Kevin Stitt signed a bill (SB 613) making it a felony for health care workers to prescribe pharmaceutical medication to children under 18, who are experiencing gender dysphoria. The underage children are also not permitted to undergo gender-affirming surgery.

The new bill follows one that was signed into legislation back in October 2022 called SB 3XX. A press release, at that time, was released and titled, “Governor Stitt Signs Bill to Prevent Gender Transition Services at OU Children’s Hospital, Calls for Statewide Ban on Irreversible Transition Surgeries, Hormone Therapies on Minors.”

At the time, Governor Stitt said, “By signing this bill today we are taking the first step to protect children from permanent gender transition surgeries and therapies. It is wildly inappropriate for taxpayer dollars to be used for condoning, promoting, or performing these types of controversial procedures on healthy children.”

Governor Stitt added, “I am calling for the Legislature to ban all irreversible gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors when they convene next session in February 2023. We cannot turn a blind eye to what’s happening all across our nation, and as governor I will not allow life-altering transition surgeries on minor children in the state of Oklahoma.”

In a press release for the new bill (SB 613), Governor Stitt says, “Last year, I called for a statewide ban onall irreversible gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors so I am thrilled to sign this into law today and protect our kids. We cannot turn a blind eye to what’s happening across our nation, and as governor I am proud to stand up for what’s right and ban life-altering transition surgeries on children in the state of Oklahoma.”

Per the press release, SB 613 “bans the use of any medications or surgical procedures for the purpose of gender transition. Penalties for violation include felony charges, license revocation and civil actions which can be filed by a parent or guardian.”
