According to The New York Post, citing preliminary data from the city’s health department, zero new deaths were confirmed within a 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The major turning point in its battle against the coronavirus pandemic comes as the city prepares to begin reopening next week. City Hall spokeswoman Avery Cohen said: “In the face of extraordinary challenges, New Yorkers have gone above and beyond to keep each other safe throughout the crisis.” She added: “With hope on the horizon, we will continue to do everything we can to reopen safely without losing sight of the progress we’ve made.”
As we previously reported, the Big Apple was once the epicenter of the outbreak in the US, with between 500 and 800 new Yorkers dying every day at its peak in April.
Officials cautioned that it’s still possible that the number could be upgraded due to lag times in reporting, and because the three probable coronavirus deaths during that period are still under investigation, according to The Daily Mail. Still, the latest numbers offered some hope following weeks with hundreds of tragic losses.
“This is great news,” Mayor Bill de Blasio’s press secretary Freddi Goldstein reportedly told the New York Daily News.
