Nearly a month after a grand jury declined to file criminal charges in Nolan Wells’ mysterious July 4 death, his parents have released nearly 300 pages of phone records and Snapchats with his friends. The documents reveal what the 18-year-old’s friends privately talked about (leading up to, during, and after his death) and what they agreed to tell the police if ever questioned.
Grand Jury Declines Criminal Charges In Nolan Wells Death, His Family Drops Independent Autopsy Results And More Potential Evidence
As we previously shared, on September 21, a Mississippi grand jury revealed their decision not to file any charges in Wells’ death. They said they found no foul play and no criminal or racial motivation. Instead, the jury ruled his death was “consistent with drowning,” the initial ruling found by local authorities in Horn Island.
District Attorney, Angel Myers McIlrath, said the decision by the grand jury was unanimous. She said they considered a large amount of evidence from witnesses and other sources. This included elements of the independent investigation launched by Wells’ family.

Following the decision, Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, and their attorney, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, condemned the grand jury and district attorney. The family continued to speak out and release their own findings. This included an independent autopsy showing “blunt force injuries” to the back of the teen’s head and body.
The independent autopsy also revealed there was no water found in his lungs, throat, or stomach — which would have been consistent with a drowning as pushed by local authorities.
Nolan Wells Family Release Over 200 Pages Of Phone Records As Donald Trump Considers Federal Investigation Into Teen’s Death
By September 25, Nolan Wells’ friends boldly denied deleting any of his phone records and messages and Snapchats from his phone and argued they would file defamation lawsuits against Ben Crump and others spreading misinformation. As Wells’ parents continue to plea for a reopened investigation, on October 8, President Donald Trump said, “We’re looking at” a possible federal investigation.
On Tuesday (October 13), reports began surfacing about Wells’ parents releasing his cellphone records, including private messages from 29 group chats. In the 292-page report, it show Wells friends reacting to news and speculating about his death. It also included messages about them reacting to police contacting them and what they should say — like asking for an attorney.
