Newest Variant Of COVID-19 In China Could Potentially Hit 65 Million Cases A Week By July 1

According to reports, China is currently bracing for a coronavirus surge that looks to peak at 65 million cases a week by the end of June.

Dr. Zhang Wenhong — who is a director at the Center for Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital in Shanghai — said that about 75% of those infected with the most recent rise of COVID in China, were not a part of the groups infected in the initial wave of the virus.

It is reported that the new infections in China have been fueled by the omicron subvariant XBB, which is also present in the United States. It is reported that the current variants infecting people are omicron subvariants BA.5.2 and BF.7.

Dr. Wenhong also warned that China “should not go too far in taking pandemic prevent measures in response.”

Dr. Wenhong further noted that the resurgence in cases “should not have a huge impact overall on economic activity and life.” Therefore, he suggests that China should not look to impose harsh restrictions or any lockdowns that will impact the country’s economy or result in any widespread protests.

Prior to the latest report, China had implemented a strict “Zero COVID” policy, that was intended to curb the spread of the fatal virus.

The policy also included stringent city lockdowns, mass testing, contact tracing, and quarantines to prevent local transmission. However, the policy crippled the economy of the country, which has recently just bounced back after easing the lockdown measures, which followed massive protests.

Furthermore, it is also reported that while China now considers COVID to be a “Class B” illness, officials “have also been trying to reassure the public, saying that the symptoms are relatively mild.”  Meanwhile, since April 2023, there have been more COVID cases recorded in China.

And as mentioned the cases are predicted to jump up to 65 million people infected a week by late June. Another official, Respiratory Disease Specialist Dr. Zhong Nanshan, said that the numbers are up about 25 million, from the initial 40 million infections he had predicted back in late May, after the wave began again in late April.
