Netflix Defends “Cuties” Film After Being Called Out For Sexualizing Children

Netflix has been getting hit with tons of backlash following the release of the movie trailer for “Cuties.” The film which tells the story about a young Senegalese girl in Paris who joins a “free-spirited dance clique” to escape family dysfunction, premiered this month and has spawned a new backlash by critics who believe the film goes over the line by portraying children in a sexualized manner.

On Thursday, the hashtag #CancelNetflix even began trending as users were upset that the streaming service didn’t scrub the film after the first social media outrage. However, Netflix is now speaking out once again to defend the project that won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance this year.

@Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to Variety. “It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up — and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie,” Variety quotes.

Cuties‘ director Maïmouna Doucouré reveals that after the Netflix poster for the film released, the controversy and backlash resulted in multiple death threats received. However, she has not spoken out on these latest calls for a takedown.
