Singer Ne-Yo is condemning some of today’s parents who are allowing their children to transition genders. He asks, “When did it become ok to let a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision?”
While sitting down with Gloria Velez on her self-titled podcast on VladTV, the “So Sick” singer not only opened up about his music career, but also touched on hot and trending topics on social media. One of those subjects that happened to come up was children transitioning genders, with approval and assistance from their parents.
Upon speaking on the topic, Ne-Yo offered a disclaimer. He said, “I have no issue with the [LGBTQIA+] community, I have no problem with nobody. Love who you love. Do what you do. I just personally come from an era where a man was a man, and a woman was a woman, and there wasn’t but two genders, and that’s just how it rocked.”
He added, “Now, you could identify as a goldfish if you feel like. I don’t care. That ain’t my business. It becomes my business when you try to make me to play the game with you. I’m not going to call you a goldfish. You want to be a goldfish? Go be a goldfish. We live in a weird time, man.”
Aside from calling out people who post videos of themselves crying on social media, Ne-Yo, born Shaffer Chimere Smith, made his way to condemn parents who allow their children to transition.

After comparing how he was raised versus how parents today are raising their children, he stated, “We need to get back to [old days]. I feel like parents have almost forgotten what the role of a parent is. If your little boy comes to you and says, ‘Daddy, I want to be a girl.’ And you just let him rock with that? He’s five. If you let this five-year-old boy decide to eat candy all day, he’s going to do that.”
Ne-Yo continued to condemn parents, questioning, “When did it become a good idea to let a five-year-old, let a six-year-old, let a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision for themselves? When did that happen? I don’t understand that. I don’t get that.”

Ne-Yo then recalled something he had heard before about children wanting to transition genders, and how instead a parent allowing their child to do so, they should approach things a different way.
He said, “I heard somebody say one time, ‘If your son comes to you and says, ‘Daddy, I want to be a girl,’ ask your son, ‘Son, what is a girl?” What is he going to do? He’s going to say he might want to ‘play with dolls.’ ‘Alright, you want to play with dolls? Fine, play with dolls. But, you’re a boy playing with dolls.’ ‘I want to wear pink!’ ‘Alright, cool. Wear pink. But, you’re a boy wearing pink.'”
Ne-Yo went on to clarify, “Style preference is one thing. But gender selection is a whole other thing.”
