Jackson, who was “shocked and dismayed” by the sudden decision, confirmed the news himself.

He announced the shocking news on Twitter saying, “This morning, unexpectedly, I was informed that my services were no longer needed at ESPN,” he said Monday “Although shocked and dismayed with the suddenness of it all, I would like to thank ESPN and all the staff of the NBA ESPN crew for allowing me to be a part of the organization for the past 15+ years.“

Jackson’s departure took many by surprise. After all, he was one of the most recognizable figures in sports broadcasting. He was known for his catchphrases like “Mama, there goes that man!” and “Hand down, man down”, which became part of the vernacular of basketball fans worldwide. His colorful commentary and deep understanding of the game, borne from his years as a player and a coach, were appreciated by many.

However, his tenure at ESPN had not been without controversy. Jackson’s outspokenness on various issues, including his religious beliefs and his stance on social issues, had been a subject of criticism. ESPN did not provide a specific reason for Jackson’s dismissal. This latest firing comes just a month after ESPN let go of many notable personalities on their network, including Jalen Rose, Keyshawn Johnson, Max Kellerman, and many others. However, the suddenness of the decision and the lack of a clear explanation has led to speculation about the true reasons behind the move.

Meanwhile, Jackson’s fans took to social media to express their disappointment at the news. Many praised his insightful commentary and unique perspective on the game, saying that the broadcasts would not be the same without him. Despite the blow, Jackson remained gracious and thankful.

“I would also like to thank the NBA fans watching at home and in the arenas throughout the league for all of your support. To the NBA, a heartfelt thank you for allowing a kid to continue to accomplish his dreams.”

He continued, “It has been an honor to sit beside two LEGENDS in the business. who are like brothers to me. Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy, and learn so much from them. Lisa Salters is a GOAT and like a sister to me and I’m so proud of the work she continues to do. To the best producer in the world, and my friend, Tim Corrigan, I give the utmost gratitude and thanks for always inspiring and supporting me. To all of the staff and crew, that may have never been seen on camera… please know that you were always seen by me and so greatly appreciated.”

Despite the unexpected setback, Jackson remained optimistic about his future.

“Finally, I wish greater measures of success to the new ESPN team. May they continue to elevate this game that has given me a home and a life. I leave ESPN with nothing but gratitude, all the while knowing that my highest praise goes to God! Through it all, He has always sustained me and His grace allows me to know that there are greater blessings ahead. I look forward to what He has in store next.

Regardless of where his career takes him next, his impact on NBA broadcasting will not be forgotten. Fans and colleagues alike will miss his unique voice and perspective, making the loss of his presence at ESPN felt for years to come.
