Socialites, get into this: Mo’Nique has settled her discrimination lawsuit against Netflix.
As we previously reported, the actress and 54-year-old comedian originally filed the suit in the fall of 2019, alleging that the company discriminated against her when they offered her just $500,000 to do a comedy special. She rejected and protested the offer, which was for a one-hour show that Netflix would retain complete control over. Netflix eventually walked away from the negotiations after she accused them of discrimination. Mo’Nique went on to sue Netflix for refusing to come back with an opening offer. In a series of statements and posts, she claimed Netflix had been underpaying Black women and comparing their offer to the eight-figure deals received by fellow comedians Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and Amy Schumer.
“I couldn’t accept that low offer because if I did … I couldn’t sleep at night,” she said in a statement at the time. “If I accepted $500,000, what does Tiffany Haddish have coming? If I accept that, what does the Black female comedian have coming? Because what they’ll say is, ‘Mo’Nique accepted this and she’s got that.’ So what do they have coming?”
Netflix said in a statement at the time, “We believe our opening offer to Mo’Nique was fair — which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit.”

Now, Netflix didn’t fight hard enough as
a federal judge overseeing the case sided with Mo’Nique’s novel theory that Netflix’s failure to negotiate an opening offer consistent with its normal practice. The judge wrote at the time, “At the very least, Mo’Nique’s allegations permit the plausible inference that, had she not challenged her offer as discriminatory, Netflix would have continued negotiating in good faith with her and increased her offer, consistent with its customary practice in dealing with talent in the entertainment industry.”
Now, after years of back-and-forth legal drama, both sides on Tuesday moved to dismiss the suit, according to a court filing. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Monique who is active on social media, has not yet commented on her latest settlement.
Aside from this, Mo’Nique has been in the headlines over her beef with fellow comedian D.L. Hughley. As we previously reported, the two have been going at it over a contract dispute from a Detroit comedy show where Mo’Nique alleged that she was the headliner. After throwing a couple of jabs at each other, Monique decided to hit home. She recently brought up Hughley’s youngest daughter’s sexual assault incident from a family friend in an attempt to strike a nerve.
