Mississippi Mayor Refuses To Resign Or Apologize After Mocking George Floyd Murder
After Petal, Mississippi Mayor Hal Marx posted some disparaging comments on social media yesterday, mocking the tragic murder of George Floyd, residents called for an apology and his resignation — both of which he refuses to offer, instead he threatens to sue if successfully ousted.
It all began after Marx shared his support for police officers involved in Floyd’s killing. He posted on social media, “Why in the world would anyone choose to become a police officer in our society today?” He followed it up with, “If you are talking about the incident in MN, I didn’t see anything unreasonable. If you can say you can’t breath, you’re breathing. Most likely that man died of overdose or heart attack. Video doesn’t show his resistance that got him in that position. Police being crucified.”

Following his outrageous comments, Marx deleted his Twitter, and the Petal Board of Aldermen held a special town hall meeting that evening to vote unanimously in requesting their mayor’s resignation; they were joined by outraged residents of all backgrounds. During this meeting, they expressed their experiences of racism not only from other residents, but of previous comments made by Marx. Before the meeting’s end, Marx refused to offer any solace to his residents and the family of George Floyd.
