Former President Barack Obama highlighted the importance of checks and balances in government for holding leaders accountable during the launch of his presidential center. He emphasized that “no one is above the law or beneath its protections.”

Obama expressed his hope that his center would reinforce “just how special, how precious our democracy truly is.”

Looking ahead to the nation’s 250th anniversary, he reflected on the country’s founding, emphasizing a vision of “no kings or lords, no serfs or subjects, but only citizens, each of us free to pursue our own version of happiness and able to determine our collective fate through an elected representative government.”

Michelle Obama shared her thoughts on what it means to leave “a lasting legacy” during the celebration at the Obama center, telling attendees that it’s not defined by “an award or name on a building or number of zeros in a bank account,” but by “the difference we make in one another’s lives.”

“It’s about seeing each other and showing up for each other and carrying each other when we’re weary or faltering or losing faith,” she stated. “That’s how you build something that endures.”

The former first lady commended those who contributed to the center’s creation, acknowledging that their dedication and support shaped the incredible journey that brought this moment to life.

There’s some speculation that Obama might have subtly referenced President Donald Trump in her remarks. Trump has attracted attention for trying to rename the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to include his own name and for frequently claiming he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, which Barack Obama himself received.
