Miami Mayor Orders Shut Down Of Beaches Ahead Of Fourth Of July Weekend

While we reported yesterday that Florida bars would be closing again to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez is gearing up to sign an executive order to shut down all Miami-Dade County beaches ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

The order will be effective as of Friday, July 3 and will also prohibit any gatherings of more than 50 people until July 7. Mayor Gimenez announced his plans on Friday night in response to a jump in positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations among young adults.

Gimenez stated, “I have decided that the only prudent thing to do to tamp down this recent uptick is to crack down on recreational activities that put our overall community at higher risk.” Additionally, fireworks shows will be limited this year as Gimenez adds, “Fireworks displays must be viewed from one’s home or parked vehicle.”

Gimenez concluded that violators of these policies are subject to a second-degree criminal penalty of up to $500 and 180 days in jail.
